50th Class Reunion
Friday and Saturday, October 8th -9th , 2010
A Review of the 50th Reunion of LRCHS Class of 1960
Golden Reflections of the Eye: No, we don’t look the same as we did
50 years ago, but we’re still here!
Golden Reflections of the Mind: We remember the past, the good and
the bad, and the uncertainty of the future. We have walked our separate paths
and now we return.Golden Reflections of the Heart: Many of our classmates are no longer
with us in body, but they live on in our memories.
Can it really be 50 years since we graduated? Tradition suggests that 50th
Anniversaries are celebrated with Gold, which fits with the LRCHS colors of Gold
and Black, and after all, Gold is currently priced at a record high.
Time has made our memories mellow over the years, but we can never forget that
we were a part of history in the making. I am sure that many of us remember our
first day at Central High back in September of 1957. In fact our whole sophomore
year was pretty unbelievable. Then we experienced upheaval in our junior year as
we were split up to various locations and faced different options. We all have
memories of the year that wasn’t. But then we came back to Central High in the
fall of 1959. We should all be proud that we were part of returning Little Rock
Central High School to its place of prominence in the city and state, even our
nation.
Many changes have taken place since 1960. The school now is a National Park,
the only school in the country to have that designation. The old fish pond that
had been made into a concrete slab is now converted to a beautiful “reflecting
pool”. There is no Campus Inn, but there is an elevator! Quigley Stadium needs
some work, but there is a new baseball field. Come join us as we reflect back
on a time in our lives when things were simpler, and we thought we had all the
answers, the problem was we didn’t know the questions!
Reunion Activities
Our 50 year class reunion! Who would have thought we would have made it this far.
50 years ago, this date seemed so very far away. Now it has come and gone. Once again
all we are left with are memories. The weekend seemed to go by way too fast. The last 50
years seemed to have gone by way too quickly. We all enjoyed seeing every one. We
remembered those who are no longer with us. We wondered where the absent classmates were
and wished they were here.
The weekend started off with a fish-fry at the Shrine Temple. It is a great facility with
plenty of room, so we thought. A record crowd filled the space and we had a great time
renewing old acquaintances. 50’s music filled the air and the second “Reflections” CD of
50’s music was the favor for Friday evening. Those of you who attended the 45th Reunion
got the First CD. There is one more to come.
Very early Saturday morning the Golfers met at The Maumelle Country Club for a round of
golf. The weather was absolutely marvelous, we could not have asked for a better day.
Lee Elementary, East Side Junior High, and West Side Junior High were open Saturday
morning for a quick look around. Lee is a Community Center, and East Side and West Side
are now loft style apartments. It was good to see that they had not been torn down and
replaced with parking lots.
Then it was on to Central High School. The fact that it is a National Park means
that it has fared better than most schools. It is truly in pristine condition. The
only problem is that they need to expand. Class President Richard Ezell and Secretary
Sandra Haley Lichty conducted a brief Memorial Service for the 65 deceased classmates.
Principle Nancy Rousseau gave a review of where the school is today and answered our
questions. Mr. Buddy Matson spoke in place of Mrs. Margaret Duberry Matson, who hopefully
is feeling better. Mr. Paul Magro also spoke kindly of our class, we wondered if time had
clouded his memory! We had a brown bag lunch in the cafeteria with a cake that had our
45th Reunion Picture on it. Then, we all went out to the front steps for a 50th Reunion
Picture.
Saturday Evening we reconvened at Pleasant Valley Country Club for cocktails at 6:30,
and a buffet dinner at 7:30, grilled chicken, ham and prime rib were on the menu. Paul
Redditt gave the invocation, Cyril Hollingsworth, Reunion Committee Chairman, shared some
memories, and Gene Bowman had some prizes and surprises. Gene also presented all of our
out of state attending class members with their very own Arkansas Traveler Certificates.
Favors for Saturday evening were gold or silver mirrored balls that were the centerpieces
for the tables. We ended the evening with dancing to music provided by Blue Velvet.
The Reunion Committee produced a special History/Directory book aka Tiger Pride.
Many of you didn’t have a chance to really look at it until after the reunion. We hope
that you could see that many that had been lost have now been found. Those of us who worked
on the book had a great trip down memory lane. We hope you will take the time and contact
those who you missed and let them know we were thinking of them.
To sum up the weekend, it is safe to say that:
“A Good Time was had by All!”
Reunion Materials
Those of us at the Saturday Banquet were moved by the invocation given by Paul Redditt. If
